i did a little research and it turns out social media is addicting :-O
i know! surprise, surprise! really?
yep, we simply cannot deny. whether it’s pinterest, instagram, facebook, whatever – we are junkies. and like addicts of another sort we also inherit some very negative side effects.
- it makes us spend more money – seeing those pretty items on pinterest or those vacations your facebook friends are taking makes us want and makes us inadvertently spend more.
- it makes us depressed – seems like we only post the good stuff right? no-one wants to see negative sad terrible things and so everyone thinks everyone else has it better than they do. like everyone is bragging. how not to be jealous? remember they have bills too and their kids aren’t perfect. the photo on instagram was one second in time. feelings of inadequacy bubble up to the surface within minutes of surfing our networks.
- it makes us obese – it’s on the rise, firstly we are taking on a sedentary hobby – social media, blogging, pinning. then we see tasty foods – much like those applebees commercials on tv making us get up and eat nutella out of the jar because we don’t have a medium rare steak with mozzarella sticks, a bowl of mac and cheese, and a brownie ready for us right this second. also that depression thing isn’t helping our weight.
there are more side effects like it messes with our ability to think independently, it can cause adhd, and it can sabotage real life conversations.
here’s a helpful infographic:
the cure? 100% abstinence isn’t necessary (or possible for that matter). just get out and talk to real life people. even on the phone your best friend has the opposite effect on you than social media – she’s as good as a therapist :)
i researched because i needed to learn about all this ;)
